Part of the issue is definitely the length of the Biome. But after the first phase it shifts into a giant blob, I get Resi 7 ending flashbacks, and suddenly I’m not too invested in the visual aspect at all. Visually the boss starts off cool as HECK, a giant skeleton rising from a pit? Yes please. I think that Ophion is the weakest boss in almost every way. Shoot the orbs to make the glowy bits appear, shoot the glowy bits to do damage, avoid slow moving and hugely telegraphed attacks, rinse and repeat as needed. In the end, after a good run and on the first attempt, I beat Ophion basically without being hit.
The last Biome is so massive that getting helpful items, good weapons, and more health is practically guaranteed. Because, other than the spectacle and awesome final Biome that leads there, Ophion is kinda… dull? It’s peak Resi boss design shoot the glowy stuff.Īfter what is likely 20-30 hours of Returnal, most of Ophion’s attacks are extremely simple to navigate, so it’s just a matter of DPS and surviving the few attacks that DO hit you. Ophion, despite being last, is kinda saved by the journey there and the injection of story after beating this final boss. You know, Returnal has a great story, if a little ambiguous and weird. So today I’m publishing my definitive Returnal boss ranking. We’re a storied lover of bosses here at SeriouslyAverageGamer, having played most boss-heavy games out there between the two of us. However the one area I didn’t quite get the page space to tackle in my review was that of bosses. I recently reviewed the game at an 87/100, and the review is now final, as I beat it a few days after posting. Returnal is the latest PS5 exclusive, courtesy of Housemarque.
